Supernatural

A mobile app designed to help users build consistent, joyful spiritual practices by combining meditation, daily actions, and habit-forming tools.

PROJECT SNAPSHOT

  • A personal exploration of an end-to-end mobile app design.

  • UX & UI Designer

  • 4 weeks.

  • Daily tools for spiritual practice that instill consistency.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

When I started this project, I asked myself: Why do so many people discontinue their meditation practice? I wanted to uncover the frustrations and barriers that stop people from creating a consistent and joyful spiritual habit.

Through research, I realized that the problem was more than just meditation—it was about building a sustainable routine that helps people integrate mindfulness into their daily lives. This shift in perspective redefined the app from a meditation guide to a holistic tool for spiritual practice, where meditation became just one part of the journey.

APPROACH

I followed a human-centered design process, focusing on user needs at every step. I iteratively aligned research, feedback, and design goals to ensure the app would truly serve its users.

Research Goals

  1. Understand why users struggle with meditation and spiritual practices.

  2. Identify habits that support long-term consistency.

  3. Explore how to make spiritual routines enjoyable and rewarding.

Steps I Took

  • Secondary Research — I categorized common challenges like inner distractions (restlessness), external barriers (noisy environments), and self-sabotage (unrealistic expectations).

  • User Interviews — I spoke with experienced meditators and spiritual teachers to learn what worked for them and what didn’t.

  • Persona Creation — I developed "Emma Shay," a beginner balancing frustrations and aspirations, to guide design decisions.

  • Refining the Problem Statement — Using the "How Might We" framework, I narrowed the focus to helping beginners overcome frustrations and create a sustainable practice.

IDEATION

I brainstormed solutions to address user pain points and reinforce positive behaviors. Using methods like Crazy Eights and Storyboarding, I explored ideas for balancing meditation with actionable exercises.

The concept of Cue → Action → Reward became central, ensuring users could build joyful habits while staying motivated.

PROTOTYPING & TESTING

Low-Fidelity Prototypes

I moved through two rounds of usability testing to refine the app’s features and flows.

  • I started with rough wireframes to map out the user journey.

  • Testing revealed that onboarding was too complex and needed streamlining.

  • Users preferred combining meditation and daily actions into a single flow for clarity.

HIGH FIDELITY PROTOTYPES

UI Design

I introduced an earthy palette with browns, greens, and muted reds to create a calming visual identity.

Core Features

Notifications & Alarms — Gentle reminders to guide users throughout their day. Reinforcing habits with reminders tied to lessons.

Profile — Progress tracking and rewards to encourage consistency & keep users motivated.

Lessons — A single flow combining meditation and daily actions to simplify the experience. Balancing meditation with actionable daily exercises for a holistic spiritual practice.

Journal — A space for users to reflect, release, and link thoughts to lessons or content. Encouraging reflection and emotional clarity, with features like hashtag linking for seamless navigation.

Saved Content — A feature to store lessons, blogs, and reflections for easy access. Allowing users to bookmark and revisit resources.

CONCLUSION

This project taught me the importance of adaptability. By focusing on user needs and being willing to pivot based on feedback, I was able to create an app that goes beyond meditation to support a meaningful spiritual practice.

If I could revisit the process, I’d incorporate another round of usability testing with the high-fidelity prototype to fine-tune the experience further. Overall, this project reinforced my ability to manage complex, end-to-end designs while balancing creativity with user-driven insights.

Supernatural became more than an app—it’s a companion for anyone striving to live more consciously, combining mindfulness and action into a seamless daily practice.
